As they stand, UK libel laws are so opposed to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (‘the right to speak without censorship and/or limitation’) that they have been criticised by the UN human rights committee, who usually reserve their condemnations for atrocities such as executions that follow unfair trials.
